Tim Denehy, Aftermarket Sales Manager at L&M Radiator, knows good people make all the difference. That’s why he’s proud to work at L&M, where diligent and driven people are no rarity.
St. Louis, Missouri — The world of sales is a fast-paced and ever-changing field. As more companies shift gears from pushing products and services to accommodating consumer preferences and outselling competitors, it’s important to see where one can make a difference in sales where it counts.
Tim Denehy, Aftermarket Sales Manager at L&M Radiator, is no stranger to this world.
Four years ago, Denehy joined L&M Radiator with more than 30 years of sales experience under his belt. Defined by his dedication to the field, Denehy is proud to be making a difference in international sales with the Mesabi team.
“When you take care of people, they take care of you,” said Denehy. “We’re taken care of at L&M.”
It’s the strong company culture at L&M that initially stood out to him. From the jump, Denehy was exposed to a rewarding, supportive environment spurred on by the efforts of everyone at L&M, from owners and management to entry-level employees on their way up. Everyone matters, and everyone’s input counts – that’s what makes the Mesabi Difference work.
“L&M Radiator has a people-first culture where people aren’t just a number. They focus on the quality of life of the people who work here. They’re understanding when people have family issues. They’re cognizant of people’s home lives,” said Denehy. “So, business is still business – you have to do it and build it and get things done, but there’s this added dynamic that acknowledges that all people are whole people and have lives outside of work.’”
The World of Sales: Where Success Means Dedication
Denehy’s long record of international sales experience dates back prior to 2006. Early on, he took a big step into the mining industry, working directly with distributors in countries such as Australia, Brazil, India, and Indonesia, solidifying his interest in nurturing direct client relationships. Later, he gained experience in just about every sales position under the sun – from Vice President to Director. Denehy has seen much of what the mining industry has to offer.
Now, after several defining years at L&M Radiator, Denehy’s recent promotion to Sales Manager places him in the aftermarket space, where he primarily cultivates relationships in North and Latin America, Africa & other key global markets for L&M. He also will be taking on newer responsibilities as manager, leading teams of sales representatives as the company undergoes its acquisition by Wabtec Corporation, a global powerhouse in railway technology.
“With the new acquisition, we have to change; we have to grow. The sales team now has someone who is there for them specifically – that’s the part I’m enjoying the most – taking care of our team members,” said Denehy. “We’re pretty fortunate at L&M to have a good group of people and great leadership on our team.”
“Everything at L&M is people oriented. I’m a newbie. I’m three years in, and I’m working with people who are 12, 18, 20 years in. The longevity of these people speaks to how this company is run,” said Denehy.
A big-picture thinker and people person, Denehy has the ability to keep a pulse on what’s going on in different departments and to truly connect with his colleagues. For Denehy, the time spent together in meetings and otherwise has meant getting to know his colleagues on a personal level.
“We don’t have your typical sales meetings. We have engineers, customer service people, and just about “every person and their dog” at those meetings. You’re able to expand your network of people you’re in communication with. You get to interact with the other teams. That’s the best part, and certainly the most rewarding.”
When he’s not at the office, Denehy lets his grandkids run the show, which means unicorn t-shirts and tea parties abound. He’s a family man at heart and tries to spend as much time with them as he can. He flies a radio-controlled aircraft with his oldest son and almost every year they head to the IndyCar race in Indianapolis, Indiana and document their experience with photographs. As an avid photographer, Denehy takes his camera along with him on his many travels and adventures. In the wintertime, he loves heading out on the weekend to take pictures of the eagles that fish along the Mississippi River. No matter where he goes, Denehy’s camera comes with him.
